The Government of Canada, the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and occupational therapy regulatory organizations in each province all have requirements that internationally trained occupational therapists must meet before they can work in Canada.

Immigrating to Canada

If you are an internationally educated occupational therapist and wish to practise in Canada, the first step you must take is to apply to the regulatory organization in the province where you wish to work.

You must receive immigration approval to enter and work in Canada. The department responsible for immigration services is Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Some provinces also have immigration requirements.

The Going to Canada Immigration Portal also provides valuable information to help new Canadians to integrate into Canadian society.

Employment in Canada

There are a number of resources where occupational therapists can find out where occupational therapists work and where jobs are posted.

A good place to begin is to visit the career listings page on the CAOT web site. On this site, you will find jobs that are available across Canada.

The provincial professional organizations may also be able to assist you to locate local employment opportunity information.
